Description
A warm and comforting cheesy sardine bake made with tender sardines in tomato sauce, sautéed onions and garlic, and topped with a golden blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Simple, budget-friendly, and packed with savory flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cans sardines in tomato sauce (about 120 grams each)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (about 150 grams)
- 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese (about 50 grams)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
- Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté chopped onion until soft, then add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add sardines with their tomato sauce and gently flake with a fork. Stir in black pepper, dried oregano, and salt. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Lightly grease a medium baking dish.
- Transfer the sardine mixture into the baking dish and spread evenly.
- Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated cheddar evenly over the top.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
- Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Taste the sardines before adding extra salt since some brands are already salty.
- Freshly grated cheese melts better and gives a smoother texture.
- If the sauce seems too watery, simmer slightly longer before baking.
- Let the bake rest briefly to help it set and slice more neatly.
