Chocolate Gravy

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A classic Southern comfort, this chocolate gravy is rich, velvety, and perfect served warm over biscuits. It’s quick to make and loaded with nostalgic flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, sugar, and salt until well blended.
  2. Gradually add milk while whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  3. Cook over medium-low heat, whisking frequently, until the mixture thickens (about 7–10 minutes).
  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla until fully incorporated.
  5. Let sit for 1–2 minutes, then serve warm over biscuits or your favorite breakfast treat.

Notes

  • Sift cocoa and flour beforehand for a smoother texture.
  • Use whole milk for the creamiest result.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or cayenne for a flavor twist.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated with a splash of milk.
