Description
A classic diner favorite, these Diner-Style Patty Melts feature juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, and melty Swiss cheese all tucked between golden, buttery rye bread. Crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle, they’re a comforting sandwich you’ll crave again and again.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 8 slices rye bread
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Heat a skillet over medium heat to preheat it evenly.
- In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Shape into 4 thin oval patties slightly larger than the bread slices.
- Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the skillet. Add the onions and cook over medium-low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring often, until deeply caramelized. Remove and set aside.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, layer cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, more cheese, and another slice of bread, butter side facing out.
- Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Press down gently with a spatula and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
- Let sandwiches rest briefly before slicing in half and serving hot.
Notes
- Use shredded cheese for quicker melting.
- Toast the bread separately if making multiple melts at once.
- Pre-cook and refrigerate onions and patties for faster weeknight prep.
