Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- For the glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix sugar, melted butter, salt, vanilla extract, and eggs. Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
- Roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut out donuts with a donut cutter or two round cutters.
- Place donuts on parchment-lined baking sheets, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts a few at a time, about 1 minute per side until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- For the glaze, whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Dip warm donuts into glaze and place on a wire rack to set.
Notes
- Make sure the oil temperature is steady to avoid greasy donuts.
- Donuts are best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days.
- Try adding cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for extra flavor.
- Use a candy thermometer to keep oil at the right temperature.
