  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This homemade skillet toffee combines rich, buttery caramel with a layer of smooth chocolate and crunchy nuts. A perfect treat for holidays, gifts, or anytime you need a sweet, satisfying snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds or pecans

Instructions

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. In a heavy skillet over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil.
  3. Continue stirring as the mixture turns golden brown and thickens. If using a thermometer, cook to 300°F.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the hot toffee onto the prepared sheet and spread it evenly.
  6. Immediately sprinkle chocolate chips on top and let sit 1–2 minutes to melt, then spread evenly.
  7. Sprinkle with chopped nuts and gently press them into the chocolate.
  8. Let cool completely, then break into pieces and store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Use a heavy-bottomed skillet to prevent burning.
  • Watch closely as it cooks — the toffee can burn quickly.
  • Try adding sea salt or espresso powder for flavor variations.
  • Wrap pieces in wax paper for gifting.
