Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons coarse salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add salt and all-purpose flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a long rope, then twist into a pretzel shape.
  5. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully add baking soda.
  6. Lower each pretzel into the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon.
  7. Place pretzels on the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Do not skip the baking soda bath, it creates the classic pretzel texture.
  • Sprinkle salt while the pretzels are still wet so it sticks well.
