Description
Loco Moco is a classic Hawaiian comfort food featuring a juicy hamburger patty served over a bed of white rice, topped with a rich brown gravy and a sunny-side-up egg. It’s a hearty, savory meal perfect for lunch or dinner, bringing tropical vibes right to your plate.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 cups cooked white rice
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tbsp oil or butter (for frying eggs)
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 2–4 patties depending on your preferred size.
- Cook the patties in a skillet over medium heat until browned and cooked through, about 4–5 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Add soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened into a rich brown gravy, about 5–7 minutes.
- In a separate pan, heat oil or butter over medium heat and cook the eggs sunny-side-up or to your liking.
- To assemble, place a scoop of white rice on a plate, top with a hamburger patty, ladle the gravy over, and finish with a fried egg on top.
Notes
- Use short-grain or jasmine rice for a more authentic Hawaiian texture.
- For a shortcut, use store-bought gravy, but homemade adds the best flavor.
- You can add a side of macaroni salad for a true Hawaiian plate lunch experience.
- Swap the hamburger patty for a turkey or veggie patty for a different twist.
