Description
A crispy homemade version of the classic fish sandwich with golden breaded white fish, creamy tartar sauce, and melted cheese tucked inside a soft bun.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 small white fish fillets, about 4 ounces each (cod or pollock)
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup vegetable oil for frying
- 4 small soft burger buns
- 4 half slices American cheese
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, and lemon juice to make the tartar sauce. Set aside.
- Pat fish fillets dry and season with salt and black pepper.
- Coat each fillet in flour, dip into beaten eggs, then coat evenly with breadcrumbs.
- Carefully place breaded fillets into hot oil and fry for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove fillets and drain on paper towels.
- Place a half slice of cheese on each hot fillet so it melts slightly.
- Spread tartar sauce on the bottom bun, add the fish fillet, close with the top bun, and serve warm.
Notes
- Keep oil at the proper temperature to ensure a crisp coating.
- Lightly steam or warm the buns for authentic softness.
- Uncooked breaded fillets can be frozen for later use.
- Reheat leftovers in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 to 10 minutes to maintain crispness.
