Mushroom and Gruyère Crostini

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Crisp toasted baguette topped with sautéed earthy mushrooms and melted nutty Gruyère, finished with fresh herbs for a warm, elegant appetizer that’s easy to make and impossible to resist.

Ingredients

  • Baguette: 1 loaf, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
  • Olive Oil: 2 tablespoons, for brushing the bread
  • Mushrooms: 8 ounces, cremini or button, sliced thin
  • Butter: 1 tablespoon, to sauté the mushrooms
  • Garlic: 2 cloves, minced
  • Fresh Thyme: 1 teaspoon, chopped
  • Salt and Pepper: To taste
  • Gruyère Cheese: 1 cup, freshly grated
  • Parsley: 2 tablespoons, finely chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Equipment: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter with a splash of olive oil. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until golden, about 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in minced garlic, chopped thyme, salt, and pepper and cook for another minute.
  3. Prepare Your Cooking Vessel: Arrange baguette slices on the prepared baking sheet and brush each slice with olive oil. Toast in the oven for about 5 minutes until lightly golden.
  4. Assemble the Dish: Spoon the sautéed mushroom mixture onto each toasted baguette slice, distributing evenly.
  5. Cook to Perfection: Sprinkle freshly grated Gruyère over the mushroom-topped toasts and return the baking sheet to the oven for 5 to 7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  6. Finishing Touches: Remove crostini from the oven, sprinkle with finely chopped parsley, and let cool for a minute so the cheese sets slightly.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Arrange the crostini on a platter and serve warm as an appetizer or snack. Enjoy immediately for best texture.

Notes

  • Toast the bread before topping to avoid soggy crostini.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan when sautéing mushrooms so they brown instead of steaming.
  • Use freshly grated Gruyère for a smoother, more even melt.
  • You can prepare the mushroom mixture up to one day ahead and reheat before assembling.
