Description

Creamy and comforting classic mac and cheese made with a rich cheddar sauce and baked until golden and bubbly.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk, warmed
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar for topping, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Cook elbow macaroni in salted water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan melt unsalted butter over medium heat. Whisk in all purpose flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Gradually whisk in warmed whole milk and cook until thickened and smooth.
  5. Stir in sharp cheddar and mozzarella until melted and creamy.
  6. Season with salt and black pepper.
  7. Combine cooked pasta with cheese sauce until evenly coated.
  8. Transfer to baking dish and sprinkle extra cheddar on top if desired.
  9. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and lightly golden.
  10. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use freshly shredded cheese for best melting.
  • Do not overcook pasta before baking.
  • Reheat leftovers with a splash of milk for creaminess.
  • Store in refrigerator up to 4 days.
