French Onion Meatballs

  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

Juicy French Onion Meatballs simmered in rich caramelized onion gravy and topped with melted mozzarella cheese. A cozy, savory comfort dish inspired by classic onion soup flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape mixture into 1 ½ inch meatballs.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized.
  5. Sear meatballs in the skillet for 3 to 4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  6. Sprinkle flour over the caramelized onions and stir for 1 minute.
  7. Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until slightly thickened.
  8. Return meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy.
  9. Transfer skillet to the oven and bake for 20 minutes until meatballs are cooked through.
  10. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top and bake for an additional 5 minutes until melted and bubbly.
  11. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions slowly for maximum sweetness and depth.
  • Avoid overmixing the meatball mixture to keep them tender.
  • Let the dish rest before serving so the gravy thickens slightly.
  • Reheat leftovers with a splash of broth to loosen the sauce.
