Description
A creamy, comforting casserole layered with tender sliced potatoes, savory diced ham, and melted cheddar cheese, baked until golden and bubbly.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 medium russet potatoes, about 2 pounds, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cups diced cooked ham
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and cook until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by half of the diced ham and 1 cup of cheese. Pour half of the sauce over the layer. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, sauce, and top with remaining cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden.
- Let rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Slice potatoes thinly for even cooking.
- Let the casserole rest before serving so layers set properly.
- Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly.
